At a certain stage, any city will face a key problem in urban development-the activation and utilization of industrial sites in the original core area, such as London King's Cross and Beijing 798. This problem, in Wuhan, now has a new solution with the global release of Wuhan 1890 as an opportunity.
On December 26, 2020, Wuhan 1890 has officially embarked on global investment promotion. At the same time, the 1890 Industrial Sites Institute was officially inaugurated. Experts of urban planning and product design will work together on the protection, transformation, and innovation of the industrial heritage.

The wonder of the world 130 years ago, the spotlight of the world today
Wuhan 1890, consisting of residential and commercial composite plates, has a total built-up area of around 1.3 million square meters, among which the business area covers about 760,000 square meters, 1.22 times (623,000 square meters) that of the entire Wuguang business district and 1.24 times (612,900 square meters) that of Wuhan Tiandi business including Yi Fang. Such large-scale protection is also extremely rare across the country.
As heavyweight as an aircraft carrier, the project located on the site of the Hanyang Steelworks and Hanyang Arsenal was the base of China's first full-scale steelworks 130 years ago. In 1890, in the context of self-improvement and -prosperity, Zhang Zhidong, Governor-General of Huguang took office to build Hanyang Steelworks which is unprecedented in China at that time. The first batch of molten steel caused a worldwide buzz and was regarded in the West as a symbol of the "Awakening of China".
With the change of times, the land of Hanyang Steelworks has gradually become the core area of Hanyang. Within the second ring Road, it connects Wuchang with Hankou. The downtown now is clearly not ready for the development of the steelmakers. In 2000, the century-old iron-making work of Hanyang Steelworks came to an end and was transformed into a space of steel trading and warehousing. After 2010, the downtown function of Wuhan was strengthened again with the function of logistics and warehousing gradually weakened until most of them were abandoned.
In 2017, Hanyang Steelworks was listed in the first batch of China's National Industrial Heritage by the Ministry of Industry and Information Technology. It is also the only industrial site on the list in Wuhan so far.
In April 2019, Sunac bought the land of Hanyang Steelworks with 7.95 billion yuan, and began to build it into a civilized agglomeration with a brand-new lifestyle and increasing economic value for the city.

We need to keep something to carry on the spirit of city and the story of Hanyang Steelworks from generation to generation. Second, the value of urban functions. We need to renew something to turn this place from a factory into a center of art, commerce and culture. Third, the value of urban development. We also need to create something to give it a new culture and a new taste for life. To this end, we cooperated with AEDAS, a design team of London King's Cross."

AEDAS assembled 14 design directors to participate in the design project of Sunac Wuhan 1890.

We will maximize our restoration and design ability to protect the site and build it into a leading cultural and creative industry gathering place."
Industrial heritage institutes and demonstration zones have been set up, and the industrial landing is well in progress.
At present, Sunac Wuhan 1890 has set up the industrial heritage demonstration zone. In the global press conference on December 26, 2020, the Institute of 1890 Industrial Heritage was unveiled. This marks a change from the fragmented development and transformation of the original industrial site to a systematic and logical standardized construction.
"It's much more difficult to transform an industrial site than to build a new one." Liyong Luo told reporters, "The process involved is very complicated and limited by the protection of space. We can not do large-scale construction, and often have to adopt special means. So, we're going to build a demonstration zone first to experiment and present. In the process of transformation, we have made a lot of innovations and got enough experience. This demonstration zone is a classic work of the architect master Zhaoqing Song."
The demonstration zone of Wuhan 1890 industrial heritage was opened in June this year. It has held many cultural art exhibitions and reading parties, and has become an internet-famous site for citizens to enjoy the industrial culture of the city and improve their taste of art.
"The built-up area of the demonstration zone is 4,019 square meters, which is only three thousandths of the 1.3 million square meters blueprint of the Wuhan 1890 project. You can imagine what will happen here when the whole project is completed." Liyong Luo said.

Wuhan 1890 is planned as one park with five districts. The intersection entrance of Metro Line 12 and Line 14 will be directly set up within area of the project. This section is called TOD Gateway to the city, which will be the commercial and business center of Hanyang District in the future. The office area of Qintai headquarters will be set up in Yanqintai Avenue, and several small-scale ecological single offices will become the agglomeration of Hanyang headquarters.
The middle of Wuhan 1890 gathers a large number of remains of industrial buildings and structures, which will be developed into a cultural, creative and artistic activity zone. The feature is that each building here is custom-built in transformation, which means that each building is unique. This kind of space holds strong appeal to designers, artists and curators.
The most distinctive building in this land is a huge bar factory used to stock steel, the longest industrial plant in Asia and one of the largest single buildings of industrial site in the world. It is 550 meters long, 55 meters wide and 23 meters high. In the future, it will be transformed into a mini city, which is a must for fashion shows of major brands and large-scale art exhibitions of installations.
The whole area covers everything, including art gallery, museum, grand theatre, concert hall, business street and so on. Adjacent to the Zhangzhidong Museum, rail transit connects 7 major central urban districts directly, covering more than one million people.
Sunac is committed to urban co-building, adding diversified plate to Wuhan 1890
At the press conference, Yingjia Wang, the Executive President of Sunac China Holdings Limited and Group President of Sunac China Central China Regional, said that Sunac is the co-builder of city to Wuhan.
